Ten years of partnership between Alefa and Ranomamy
Ten years ago, water flowed for the first time at the new hydrant installed in the center of the village of Ambatofotsy, 50 kilometers south of Nosy Be. It was the first achievement of the partnership between Alefa and Ranomamy (Ranomamy means fresh water).
Since then, twelve coastal villages have been equipped with catchments, reservoirs, standpipes and laundries. A thousand women and girls have seen their water chores lightened.
Alefa brings to this project its local knowledge, its close relationship with the villagers and its logistical capabilities. Ranomamy provides the financing, oversees the construction of the facilities, which are then handed over to the village communities, and mobilizes the necessary technical skills.
The Alefa Ranomamy partnership has produced an original form of humanitarian action in the water sector, based on proximity and continuity of commitment. Its aim is not to build structures, but to provide a service: the permanent supply of rano mamy, water that's good to drink.
Villages receive ongoing support in maintaining their facilities, thanks to regular visits. Necessary improvements are made, such as new boreholes to produce more during the dry season.
It's not always easy, but seeing the activity around the water distribution points is a great reward.
